About me…

What does CPDT-KA stand for? Certified professional dog trainer - knowledge assessed.

I like to say “I came for the dogs, but stayed for the people.” I started working in the pet care industry in 2015 as a dog bather for my first job. I took that job purely because I wanted to work with dogs. As my career developed, I have met so many incredible people who have truly touched me. As much as I love getting to work with dogs, I find much of the passion I have for dog training lies in learning about new people and helping them develop a strong relationship with their pets.

In my training, I value learning, communication, and fairness. It is essential to know why our dogs do what they do, what the dogs are trying to tell us, and how to best communicate what we want from them.

I specialize in service dog training. I have experienced both physical and psychiatric disabilities that led me to train my own service dog, Robin. Through time, more education, trial and error I have been able to help others train their own service dogs as well. There is no feeling that compares to helping someone’s life become more accessible through the help of their companion!

When I’m not training dogs, you can find me reading to further my education on the science and psychology of dogs. Dogs are more than a job for me, they are a life passion!

My training methods and style

  • LIMA stands for least invasive minimally aversive. This means that we will work to find the kindest, safest way to change your dog’s behavior possible. I always start my training with positive reinforcement. You would be surprised how often this truly works when done with the proper technique and skills! Only if we find that we are not able to make progress using these methods would I move on to adding some form of aversive.

  • I firmly believe that dogs are individuals with their own thoughts, feelings, and motives. When our dogs are doing things we don’t like, more often than not they have a reason. Dogs are rarely if ever intentionally trying to be spiteful. When we work to understand their inner workings, we can enact real change and partnership with our dogs.

  • I encourage flexibility on every side of dog training:

    • I am flexible in my methods. My favorite methods might not work for you and your dog, so I am always open to changing the plan to fit your needs!

    • I like to teach our dogs to be flexible and resilient through the power of relationships and positive reinforcement.

    • Finally, I like to ask families to be flexible in the goals they create for their dogs and their willingness to try some of my methods.

Dog training is a TEAM effort!

    • Training plans are very important to me. I want to spell out your goals with your dog ands write out each step to achieve them. This serves as our road map to make sure we are using your time wisely and staying on track.

    • I keep detailed notes of every training session I have with clients and share them. This helps remind you of what we learn in each session, and shows us the progress we’ve made!
